Children who eat a balanced variety of healthy and tasty foods are more likely to eat healthily throughout their lives as adults. The responsibility for ensuring that children do not eat poorly lies with adults, especially parents.

Carbohydrates

Children need a certain amount of starchy and high-fibre foods such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. The body converts carbohydrates into energy. Children who do not eat enough carbohydrate-rich foods are often malnourished and underweight. On the other hand, children who eat more carbohydrates than their bodies use tend to be overweight. Around 50% of calories consumed by children should come from carbohydrates, with whole grain products being higher in fibre and lower in "empty" carbohydrates.

Proteinß

Protein is important for growth. Poultry, lean meat, fish, cheese and eggs are particularly rich in protein. Between the ages of 4 and 6, a child needs 15 to 20g of protein a day. 7-10 year olds need 23 to 28g. Too little protein inhibits growth and can lead to malnutrition. Protein deficiency can also delay the healing of injuries and recovery from illness.

Calcium

Calcium is needed for bone formation and is mainly found in milk and dairy products. In extreme cases of calcium deficiency in children, the bones become brittle. Calcium deficiency during childhood increases the risk of osteoporosis in old age. Between the ages of 4 and 8, a child needs about 800mg of calcium a day, which is equivalent to about half a litre of milk.

Iron

Iron deficiency can cause anaemia and can lead to tiredness and fatigue. It also weakens the immune system. A lot of iron is found in green leafy vegetables and red meat.

Vitamins

Children need a variety of vitamins to stay healthy. Vitamin deficiency leads to considerable damage to health. That's why children should eat a balanced diet with fresh fruit and vegetables.
