Warming up the hands often increases the symptoms, as the blood supply to the affected areas increases.

The discomfort is caused by cold outdoor temperatures when the body cannot provide sufficient blood flow to the extremities such as the hands and feet and keep them warm. The cold causes structural and functional disorders in small blood vessels, cells, nerves and the skin. Permanent contact with cold can lead to tumour-like or haemorrhagic lesions that may later scar.

It is important when treating the swollen and alternately painful and itchy hands and feet that they do not experience drastic temperature changes. They should be warmed up gradually to prevent the blood from suddenly rushing through the sensitive blood vessels. The hands should not be massaged or exposed to heat or cold. Anti-inflammatory ointments can relieve the symptoms.

To prevent swollen hands and feet from the cold, the only solution is the obvious one: wrap well and warmly in several layers and protect them from the cold, wind and wet. Gloves and socks should be kept as dry as possible. The rest of the body should also be wrapped up warmly, especially the head, as 30% of body heat is lost through the head. Warm up cold and numb hands in the armpits.

Many people, especially women, complain in winter about swollen fingers or toes, pain in the knuckles associated with itching, stiffness and restricted movement of the fingers, redness and small oedemas in the finger joints.
