If you suspect an animal might have rabies, you can observe its behaviour to be sure.

Rabies consists of three phases: the prodromal phase, the furious phase and the paralytic phase. In each phase of the disease, infected animals show certain symptoms that reveal whether rabies is present or not. Some of these symptoms can also occur in other diseases, so it is important to observe the overall behaviour and if in doubt, have the animal examined by a vet. The vet can test the saliva, blood serum or spinal fluid to make a reliable diagnosis. The only one hundred per cent diagnosis is an examination of the brain tissue, but this cannot be carried out on a living animal.

1st stage of rabies: prodromal phase

In rabid dogs, the first stage is characterised by an altered barking sound that lasts for two to three days.

During the prodromal phase, infected animals often show a lack of appetite. You should therefore keep an eye on the amount of food eaten and compare it with the usual amount.

The animal may develop a fever in the first stage and shows slight changes in behaviour.

2nd stage of rabies: raging phase

In the second stage of rabies, the eating behaviour changes again. The animal usually develops an unbridled appetite and eats everything it can get its hands on. It may also eat inedible objects. This phase lasts two to three days.

The animal often growls for no reason.

The pupils are dilated and the animal appears disorientated, anxious or extremely alert.

The animal displays unusually aggressive behaviour, has no fear of natural enemies and attacks moving objects, other animals or humans.

Restless pacing and trembling are signs of an incipient seizure.

3rd stage of rabies: paralytic phase

The animal often retches during the paralytic phase. This phase can last two to four days.

The animal has difficulty swallowing, drools an unusual amount and may foam at the mouth.

The animal's jaw and throat show signs of paralysis. The lower jaw hangs limply.

The signs of paralysis spread to the rest of the body. The animal eventually falls into a coma and dies.

The best protection against rabies is a regularßrabies vaccination. If a vaccinated animal is bitten by a rabid animal, it can be taken to the vet for revaccination.

You should inform the local animal welfare organisation about the presence of a rabid animal.

An animal suspected of having rabies should be taken to the vet immediately. Rabies is contagious and can quickly become very dangerous. Children should be kept away from the animal immediately.

Rabies is contagious and dangerous and is usually transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal.
