Waxes, e.g. beeswax, are used as a binding agent and to improve adhesion to the lash hairs.<\/p>\n<p>The shine of the mascara is achieved by guanine, which is obtained from nucleic acids.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A typical old wives' tale says that mascara is made from bat faeces. This is because one of the ingredients in mascara, guanine, is also found in bat faeces.
