Sensitive teeth cause a sharp, sudden pain when you have lost a crown or the enamel has worn away. This exposes the tooth cementum that lies on the root of the tooth. Dental cementum is less hard than enamel and wears away more easily. The underlying dentin is criss-crossed with nerve endings, so when these nerve endings come into contact with food, the stinging pain occurs.<\/p>\n

Is the toothache caused by cold or hot food?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A spoonful of ice cream or hot soup acts like an electric shock on the exposed nerve endings. Sudden temperature differences in the mouth or sugary foods stimulate the nerves in sensitive teeth. Even breathing in cold air can trigger the pain.<\/p>\n

The sudden onset of toothache can also have causes other than exposed nerve endings. Tooth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity. Similarly, a cracked tooth can become sensitive until it is repaired. Even after extensive dental treatment by the dentist, sensitivity can occur for a short time.<\/p>\n

Do you suffer from receding gums?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In most cases, the discomfort is caused by detached dentin. However, if the gums recede and no longer completely cover the root of the tooth, this can also lead to wear of the dental cement. Gum recession occurs naturally over time, but it can be exacerbated by gingivitis.<\/p>\n

Gum recession can be recognised by the fact that the teeth look longer than usual and you can see a small notch in the tooth at the gum line.<\/p>\n

Do you brush your teeth too hard?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you brush your teeth vigorously with a hard toothbrush, you can wear down the outer layer of the tooth and expose the nerve endings over time.<\/p>\n

The best way to find out if you are damaging your teeth and gums by brushing them is to ask your dentist by brushing your teeth in front of them.<\/p>\n

Is your diet too acidic?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The outer protective layer of the teeth can also be attacked by highly acidic foods and drinks. These include soft drinks, citrus fruits, juices, red wine and salad dressings. Reduce your consumption of highly acidic foods. Use a straw when drinking juice and lemonade so that the liquid has less contact with your teeth.<\/p>\n

After eating acidic foods, wait 20 minutes before brushing your teeth so that the saliva can neutralise the acid. Brushing your teeth too quickly after eating or drinking acidic foods wears them down faster.<\/p>\n

If you have sensitive teeth, you feel the pain, you can't have sensitive teeth without knowing about it. However, if the enamel has been worn away and the dentin has been exposed over a long period of time, it is possible to have exposed dentin without feeling the pain. The tooth may have produced an extra layer of dentin as protection to compensate.
