The Egyptians and Assyrians had large terraces for sunbathing.

At the beginning of the 20th century, two Swiss doctors founded heliotherapy, which is based on the healing effects of sunlight therapy.

Sun treatment affects the body and the soul. However, older or sensitive people should consult their doctor before exposing themselves to excessive sunlight.

The sun has a positive effect on the soul, which strengthens the immune system and fends off germs more effectively.

However, too much sun exposure can lead to fatigue, loss of appetite and fever, especially in fair-skinned people. Sunbathing for hours on end to toughen up is harmful.

Heliotherapy is particularly successful with rickets, anaemia, nasopharyngeal catarrh, scrofula and certain forms of tuberculosis.

To gradually acclimatise the body to sun exposure, you should start in spring when the sun is less intense. You should move slightly in the sun so that the body is not exposed to one side of the sun. In addition, sun exposure with movement is better for the general effect on the organism.

You start with 5 minutes of exposure and increase this by a further 5 minutes every two days until you reach 60 minutes. People with sensitive skin should always apply sun cream. Sun cream protects the skin from harmful UV rays, but still allows sunlight to reach the skin, so the positive effect is not diminished.

If you wish, you can also start with partial sunbathing, where the lower legs and feet are exposed first and the exposure is gradually spread over the whole body. When sunbathing, you should be in an open area, as overheating can occur directly next to a wall.

Do not sunbathe on a full stomach and avoid the midday sun. After sunbathing, rub the skin with a warm, damp towel.

Even in ancient Egypt, people knew that the sun had healing powers.
