For example, there may be a blow to the jaw, a bite anomaly or malocclusion, in which the teeth of the upper and lower jaw do not fit together correctly. Extreme pressure on the jaw due to constant teeth grinding or teeth clenching as well as incorrect eating and eating behaviour can also lead to TMJ disorder.

TMJ syndrome is characterised by clicking in the jaw, jaw pain, problems opening the mouth, facial pain, headaches, sinus problems and even temporary numbness.

Injury to the jaw

A severe blow to the jawbone can damage the temporomandibular joint and cause TMJ disorder. Even a blow to the ear can affect the jawbone without showing symptoms directly related to the temporomandibular joint. For example, a blow to the ear can lead to hearing loss due to an injury to the jawbone. Because of the hearing loss, the ear is examined for damage, although in reality the temporomandibular joint may have been damaged.

Such a diagnosis is often difficult to make as the ear specialist only examines for ear problems. In this case, a jaw specialist should examine the jaw for any damage or inflammation.

Distortion trauma to the cervical spine can also cause the muscles of the jaw to exert too much constant pressure on the temporomandibular joint, leading to TMJ syndrome.

Bite anomaly

Bite anomalies (malocclusion, occlusion disorder) occur when the teeth do not fit together properly, resulting in an unnatural bite. Bite anomalies are often not even noticed until the teeth wear unevenly and discomfort occurs.

Dentures that do not fit correctly cause misalignment when biting and exert pressure on the lower jaw. In most cases, the affected person adapts their chewing and biting behaviour to the misalignment, thereby contributing to TMJ disorder. If the teeth do not sit correctly on top of each other, the muscles of the temporomandibular joint have to work against this. The muscle tension causes pain and can develop symptoms of TMJ syndrome. Conversely, a bite abnormality can be aggravated by TMJ disorder.

Clenching of the teeth, teeth grinding and chewing

The more often the muscles of the jaw are tensed, the more pressure is created in the temporomandibular joint, which can lead to inflammation. The muscles themselves can also become inflamed due to constant, one-sided use.

Clenching and grinding your teeth can simply be a bad habit, but more often it occurs under severe stress. As teeth grinding usually occurs during sleep, most people do not even realise that they are grinding. The strained muscles of the jaw can cause headaches. A misaligned joint disc in the jaw joint can cause pain in the temples, forehead and neck. It is not uncommon for this >pain to be so severe and frequent that it is mistakenly treated as a migraine.

Too much food in the mouth at once or oversized food such as multi-storey hamburgers can also put a lot of pressure on the temporomandibular joint and thus trigger TMJ syndrome. Chewing hard sweets or tough food can also strain the jaw and cause teeth to chip.

Temporomandibular joint disease or temporomandibular joint syndrome can have a variety of different causes.
