Whether in swimming pools, public waters such as quarry ponds and the sea, paddling pools or simply in a bucket, water poses a potential danger to children. Parents can avoid this danger by remembering that a child can drown in just two centimetres of water.

You can only protect a child one hundred per cent from the dangers of water by either removing all areas of water, however small, from the child's play area or by always being present when the child is playing with or near water. In the swimming pool or on the beach, children can splash around in the water to their heart's content as long as an adult keeps an eye on them.

What do you need to look out for in the swimming pool, at the lake or by the sea to keep your child safe?

- Drains in swimming pools are one of the greatest dangers when dealing with water. The suction of the drain can be strong enough to hold a child under water, pulling on hair or body parts.

- The water should be warm enough. Water that is too cold, especially in winter, can paralyse the body if the child falls in and is unable to stay afloat.

- Only allow children to play in sufficiently chlorinated water or unpolluted water. Do not allow the child to wade in muddy water where you cannot see the bottom. A sudden shallow area can pull the child down and cause them to fall.

- Empty the paddling pool in the garden after each use and place it upright.

- A private swimming pool should have a fence at least one metre high with a lockable gate. Remove all toys from the pool area after every swim so that children have no reason to gain access.

- Always take a lifebuoy with you to the lake or beach.

Im und am Wasser spielen macht Kindern großen Spaß, doch Wasser kann lebensgefährlich für kleine Kinder sein.
