Unfortunately, too many people are affected by this unpleasant condition, corneal ulcers are largely preventable.

Cause of the corneal ulcer

Corneal ulcers are usually caused by infections. These are usually infections caused by fungi or bacteria, which occur particularly frequently in contact lens wearers. Alternatively, the cornea is torn by physical trauma and the tear becomes infected. Contact lenses can easily scratch the eyes and damage the cornea. Prolonged, uninterrupted contact lens wear is therefore dangerous for the eyes.

Diseases that cause dry eyes can also cause a corneal ulcer, as the eye fluid acts as natural protection for the eye.

Finally, chemicals that get into the eyes can cause corneal ulcers.

Symptoms of corneal ulcers

- Redness in the affected eye

- watery eye

- Pain and pressure in the eye

- swollen eyelid

- Pain in bright light

- Blurred vision

- Festering

- grey or white spot on the cornea if the ulcer is larger

Treatment of the corneal ulcer

Contact lenses must not be worn for the duration of the treatment so as not to aggravate the condition. Cool compresses are applied to the eye to relieve the pain. Wash your hands regularly to prevent the infection from spreading.

Ibuprofen can be taken against the inflammation and to relieve the pain. The doctor usually prescribes antibiotic eye drops for the infection.

Particularly severe cases must be treated surgically.

Prevention

- Always keep the eye moisturised. If you are prone to dry eyes, you should drip artificial tears into your eyes.

- Wear safety goggles to prevent small particles from entering the eye.

- Keep contact lenses clean and do not wear them in the eye for longer than recommended.

- Only touch the eyes with clean hands.

- Do not use tap water or saliva to clean contact lenses, only the correct solutions.

- Also clean the contact lens container regularly.

- Do not fall asleep with contact lenses.

- If eye irritation or discomfort occurs, remove the contact lenses.

Corneal ulcers are open wounds on the surface of the eye, on the cornea.
