In order to sleep better and more restfully, the most common stress factors need to be reduced.

Electronics and electrosmog

Nowadays, we can hardly live without a mobile phone or a laptop or iPad with internet access. Although these technological innovations make our lives easier and more convenient, many people work too intensively with electronics. The fact is, when your mobile phone rings, you automatically tense up. The more often the mobile phone rings, the more tense you are in the evening and the more difficult it is to wind down again. You don't have to give up the convenience of modern technology, you just need to reduce your use of it a little. You should switch off your mobile phone about two hours before going to bed and only check your emails a maximum of three times a day.

As electronic devices emit electromagnetic radiation, you should keep electrical appliances such as mobile phones, radios, computers etc. at least one metre away from your bed, as the radiation can put your body under artificial stress and disturb your sleep.

You should avoid using a computer immediately before going to bed, as the light emitted by a computer screen can disrupt your sleep-wake rhythm.

No late working

The attitude of working until the job is done can be highly unproductive. If you work until late in the evening, you can't relax sufficiently and you're inviting sleep disorders. After a restless night with disturbed sleep, you are not refreshed in the morning and work less productively. Instead, if you stop working in time to switch off before going to sleep, you can concentrate much better the next day after a good night's sleep.

Balanced daily routine

Start the day by taking a few minutes to close your eyes and think about each and every one of your friends and family members who are dear to you. Think briefly about yourself and your feelings and dreams. These positive thoughts set the tone for the day and reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces.

You can listen to calm music to relax during the day. A meditation course, tai chi or yoga can help your body and mind to find their inner balance so that external stress has less effect.

What can disturb your sleep

There are countless things that occupy the subconscious and therefore disturb sleep. The most common sleep disruptors are pain, allergies, breathing difficulties, hormonal fluctuations, shift work, worries about illnesses such as cancer, depression, parental health problems or hyperactive children. To prevent these factors from disrupting your sleep, you need to deal with them and solve problems. This can be done with the help of a doctor or by sharing the workload and talking things through with your partner.

Alcohol should be avoided at least two hours before going to bed. Contrary to the assumption that alcohol calms the nerves and makes you sleepy, alcohol can put the body into a more superficial sleep that is less restful.

Late news on television is particularly bad for sleep-deprived people. Crimes and disasters are stored in the subconscious and can prevent the body from falling into a deep sleep.

Sleep as the top priority

Sometimes it seems that sleeping is uncool these days. Many people brag about how little sleep they can get by on. Don't let this mislead you. The human body is genetically pre-programmed to spend about a third of the day in a sleep state. This time is divided into phases of light sleep, deep sleep and brain-active sleep. The sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and influences thinking, memory, growth, the immune system and even body weight. If the cycle is interrupted or disturbed, this can have a lasting effect on the biorhythm.

The modern lifestyle fills the body with stress hormones that keep us in a state of constant stimulation.
