Most children do not show this symptom, but if it occurs, a hole may have formed in the eardrum from which pus is oozing. Around 75% of all children have had an ear infection before they are 3 years old. Ear infections are caused by viruses or bacteria. If the Eustachian tube in the ear, the so-called Eustachian tube, is blocked by a cold, sinus infection or allergy, fluid accumulates behind the eardrum and it becomes inflamed. Germs thrive in warm, damp and dark places, which is why the middle ear is a particularly susceptible place for infections. As the germs spread, the inflammation worsens and causes pain. Due to the body's own defences, a fever can develop. In medical terms, the painful inflammation in and around the eardrum with fluid accumulation, reddened eardrum and possible fever is known as acute otitis media (AOM).<\/p>\n<p>As the Eustachian tube in babies and children is still very short and horizontal, they are particularly susceptible to ear infections.
