There is simply too much unknown out there. It spreads around us like a thick fog. What we can't see in the fog scares us. It is an understandable but not necessarily helpful kind of fear. On the contrary, it usually hinders us and restricts us. It prevents us from doing what we want to do, from living the life we want to live.

But you can do something about this fear. The first step has already been taken: you are dealing with your fear.

As a second step, you should try to understand them a little better.

There are days when the fog is so thick in the morning that it seems as if we can't break through it. However, when you get in the car and set off, you realise that the fog is not a wall and is easy to drive through. That it wasn't as difficult as you thought it would be. And as you move on, you realise that you can now see things that you couldn't see from your original location. You have moved into a different 'zone'. Within this zone, everything within a certain radius is clearly recognisable, but you cannot see what lies further ahead.

Until you move on and arrive in a new "zone".

Concentrate on everything you can clearly see within the zone you are currently in that is no longer uncertain: the people, the road signs, the buildings. With this knowledge, you can travel a little further through the fog and gather new information for the next step.

It is exactly the same with the fear of the unknown. That which we do not know seems to lie before us like an impenetrable fog, like a weight weighing tonnes on our shoulders. But if you take your previous knowledge, which you are not afraid of, and take a small step further with this foundation, you are already in a new zone with new information.

There are a lot of small steps between where we are now and the great unknown. Realise that you don't have to jump into the deep end straight away, you can go as slowly as you like, but you have to keep moving.

Work your way forwards step by step with the newly acquired information. Yes, a moment ago this information was still unknown and instilled fear in us, now it gives us a feeling of security for the next step.

Whenever the fear of the unknown catches up with you and makes you unable to move, think of the example with the fog. Visualise how you take a step towards the white 'mass' and it clears a little further. Look around you to see where you are and become aware of your surroundings. You can use this information to decide which direction to continue in.

And then take that step. Do it. Keep moving. Focus on penetrating the fog, not on what might be in the fog. In other words, focus on the journey, not the outcome. When you are travelling, you will automatically arrive somewhere. You don't need to worry about that. You just have to make sure that you concentrate on the steps, on the path.

Over time, the path will become easier. The "sun" of experience and knowledge will rise and clear the fog. Then you will clearly recognise the path before you. Then you will realise that you are no longer afraid of the new and unknown.

Die Angst vor dem Neuen und Unbekannten ist wohl die am häufigsten vorkommende Art von Angst.
