Stress is defined as anything that influences homeostasis (self-regulation), whether in a good or bad way. Without good stress, we would feel dissatisfied and without direction; good stress is important for a healthy life. However, good stress can turn into bad stress and vice versa.

Good stress and bad stress

Good stress, or eustress in medical terms, is stress caused by excitement and joy, for example. The pulse increases, hormones are released, but there are no signs of anxiety or compulsion. We feel eustress, for example, when we are in love, on a rollercoaster or after a sense of achievement. Good stress gives us a happy attitude to life and a desire to live.

We experience acute stress when external influences trigger negative feelings such as anxiety and pressure. Acute stress does not usually cause any harm as long as we can quickly relax again. Once the stress trigger has been removed, we can bring the body back into homeostasis.

The stress that causes illness is chronic stress. If we are repeatedly exposed to the same stress factors that we feel unable to cope with, the stress begins to make the body ill. Chronic stress is often caused by circumstances at work or in family life. The body is not made for negative, chronic stress, it needs recovery through self-regulation.

Triggers of good stress

As good stress has a positive effect on health, it makes sense to get more of it. It is important to find activities in life that make us happy and excited. The activities are different for everyone. While one person needs the adrenaline rush of a rollercoaster, for another it would be a trigger for acute stress. We have to find out for ourselves which activities give us the right kick. Anything that has a positive effect on us is good.

How good stress becomes bad stress

Good stress turns into bad stress if you get too much of it. If there are too many stress triggers, even for positive stress, the stress becomes chronic and starts to damage the body. This phenomenon is usually found in adrenaline junkies. You have to observe your own body to find out when enough is enough.

How bad stress becomes good stress

Not every form of bad stress can be turned into good stress, but it is possible to change your own perception of the factors that trigger stress. With a positive attitude, negative stress factors can also be perceived as useful and meaningful, so that the body's reactions change accordingly. With the right perception, you can cause happiness hormones to be released even in bad stress situations, transforming the stress into good stress. You can change your own perception by seeing the advantages of a situation even in negative situations and pointing out your own strengths. It takes some practice to change your perception of stress, but over time the reaction becomes automatic.

A distinction is made between "good stress" and "bad stress".
