However, scientific studies show that there are possible links between some health problems and the time change.

Fluctuation of the internal clock

The time change initially brings with it some difficulties with regard to the sleep-wake rhythm. Most people get their internal clocks used to the change within a few days, others need weeks. If the internal clock is suddenly no longer synchronised with the environment, tiredness, insomnia and irritability can occur. Hormone processes, brain activity and cell regeneration tend to take place at the same time every day. If the rhythm gets out of sync, this can lead to mood swings or even depression.

The switch to summer time can have a positive effect on winter depression, as getting up early means that you are generally exposed to more sunlight.

Our body automatically adapts to the given environmental influences. We usually get tired in the dark. As a result, we usually go to bed much earlier in winter than in summer. If you have extreme difficulties adjusting to the new time, you should take a few days off after the time change in order to gradually acclimatise your body to the new time.

Statistically, there are more heart attacks in the first three days after the changeover to summer time than during the rest of the year. This is attributed to the increased stress caused by getting up earlier.

On the other hand, the extra hour in the evening in summer means that people spend more time outdoors and do more sport. Women in particular tend to stay indoors in winter when it gets dark early, whereas in summer they benefit from an extra hour of daylight.

There are also fewer road accidents during summertime. One reason for this is that people who suffer from night blindness are still travelling in the light, whereas in winter they have to drive in the dark almost every day.

At first glance, the time change seems to have little effect on the population apart from a few days of difficulties getting used to it.
