It is frustrating and embarrassing to have to adapt to a new environment if you know nothing about it. Focus in particular on typical food, social customs, religious taboos and general attitudes towards foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>Prepare yourself mentally for the change. It may seem obvious, but many people travel or emigrate to a foreign country and are then surprised at how different everything is. They have usually already made their first faux pas. Ask other people about their experiences with the new culture. <\/p>\n<p>If you go to a southern country as a blonde, expect to be stared at because you look strange to the locals. If this makes them uncomfortable, try to dress up so that you stand out less. <\/p>\n<p>Be prepared for language difficulties. Even if you speak English fluently, there are differences in language use in every English-speaking country. Learn the local idioms to avoid any embarrassment. For example, a \"thong\" in Australia is a flip-flop (a type of sandal), in the UK it is called a thong-slip. <\/p>\n<p>The quickest and easiest way to settle into a new culture is to be in the thick of it. Talk to the locals, spend a lot of time socialising. Practise the new language by talking to other people and trying to make friends. Show an interest in the people and their country and they will take an interest in you. <\/p>\n<p>Learn the laws and rules. Find out which traffic rules are different from the ones you know. <\/p>\n<p>Even if you see lots of holidaymakers in warm countries shamelessly strolling around the shopping centres in a bikini, please don't make the same mistake if you want to live there. In all probability, it is frowned upon. <\/p>\n<p>Don't try to impose your own culture on others. Remember, you are in the minority and you are in their country, so you have to adapt. <\/p>\n<p>Hold back on criticising the country and culture, at least at the beginning. People will react defensively towards you as a foreigner. <\/p>\n<h1 align=\"center\">Common errors<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>In predominantly Catholic countries, it is considered indecent to enter a place of worship in a tank top and miniskirt. Respect this, even if you think nothing of it.<\/li>\n<li>In Asian countries, you don't enter a house wearing shoes, so make sure your socks are clean and have no holes in them. <\/li>\n<li>In England, there is the much-vaunted queue where everyone waits politely for their turn. It is considered insulting to block the pavement by chatting to a group of people there. <\/li>\n<li>In Eastern European countries, women often have to cover their hair before entering a church.<\/li>\n<li>In Spain and Italy, it is customary to take a visitor on a tour of the home, including the bedrooms and bathrooms. <\/li>\n<li>In Japan, it is extremely unhygienic to blow your nose in public. <\/li>\n<li>In some countries, shaking hands is considered an unhygienic form of germ transmission. Depending on the culture, people kiss on one cheek, both cheeks or even back and forth several times. Please pay attention to which form of greeting is customary, whether women and men greet each other in the same way and whether the mouth really touches the cheek when kissing or whether it is more of a \"cheek rub\". <\/li>\n<li>In some Indian states, burping is an expression of satisfied satiety after a meal. <\/li>\n<li>The famous German punctuality does not exist everywhere.
