An infection with Legionella is better known as Legionnaires' disease (Legionella pneumonia).

If water stands in poorly maintained pipes for a long time, the bacteria can colonise and multiply there. Infection by legionella occurs when infected water vapour is inhaled, for example in the shower. The water droplets transport the bacteria into the lungs, which can become dangerously infected. In addition to shower heads and taps, legionella can also be transmitted through humidifiers or air conditioning systems. A person infected with legionella poses no risk of infection, as the infection is not transmitted from person to person.

Elderly and immunocompromised people are the main sufferers of Legionnaires' disease. People with chronic lung conditions and heavy smokers also belong to the risk groups.

Legionnaires' disease can manifest itself in two ways. One type is known as Pontiac fever, which causes flu-like symptoms that often subside after two or three days. The other type is characterised by high fever, confusion and breathing difficulties and develops into pneumonia. In severe cases, antibiotics must be prescribed, otherwise the disease can be fatal.

Prevention of legionella infection

Bacteria are killed at temperatures above 55 degrees Celsius. Before using a suspect tap or a shower that has not been used for a long time, you should run hot water for a few minutes.

Shower heads and air conditioning systems should be cleaned and maintained regularly.

Unused water pipes should be shut down so that no water stands there.

Clean the humidifier at regular intervals. Dry and store unused appliances properly.

When you come home from holiday, leave the water running for a while and leave the room.

Legionella are bacteria that can be found in small droplets of water.
