You are mobile and have your home with you, not to mention the cult status of the caravan.

For new motorhome owners, it is important to follow a few tips before planning your holiday.

Tips for motorhome beginners

If you are renting a motorhome and have pets, you should clarify in advance with the landlord of the motorhome whether pets are allowed.

In Germany and within the EU, a class III driving licence is sufficient for a motorhome. Renting a motorhome usually requires at least one year of driving experience. The driver of the motorhome must be at least 21 years old, with some hire companies even 25 years old.

The following applies when taking children with you: the child seat should be positioned in the direction of travel to prevent it from tipping sideways. The space next to the table by the window is best suited for a small child seat or infant carrier, the seat next to it for larger child seats and booster seats. The table must be folded away or removed during the journey.

Renting a motorhome costs between 800 and 1000 euros per week during the high season. They should be considerably cheaper in the low season. Pitch fees are between 30 and 50 euros per day, and fuel costs must also be factored in.

When planning your route, don't cover too much distance at once and plan plenty of breaks for hiking, cycling or playtime for the children.

Trips to Eastern European countries or countries outside Europe usually require additional insurance or the consent of the motorhome hire company.

You should discuss the insurance cover with the hire company in advance. In most cases, the rental price already includes fully comprehensive insurance.

Spending the night in public car parks or at the side of the road is not permitted in Germany and is normally only tolerated for one night as long as no one is inconvenienced. If you have not found another place to spend the night, you should not set up camping furniture, barbecues or awnings.

Fresh water for drinking, cooking and showering can usually be bought at petrol stations, campsites and supply stations. Waste water from showers and toilets must not be disposed of in the wild, but only at waste disposal stations.

The maximum permitted load must not be exceeded, as this would impair the driving and braking behaviour of the motorhome. Bicycles, surfboards and other additional luggage must be taken into account.

Holidays in a motorhome are incomparable.
