Comparing ourselves with other fellow human beings is one of our easiest exercises. We simply can't help it. You need this comparison to find your place in the 'hierarchy' of society. <\/p>\n
Mostly it's about money, according to the motto: you are what you have. Most people want to be at the highest possible level, or at least want others to think they are. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
So the question remains: How can one stop comparing oneself with others, when we live in this hierarchical society and the majority lives according to these rules?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
From primary school onwards, everything revolves around appearance and popularity. It gets even worse in secondary school. Later comes the comparison of finances. How much do you earn? What status symbols do you own? Are you married? How many friends do you have? And so on and so forth.<\/p>\n
There seem to be unwritten laws that we have tacitly agreed upon. Advertising and the media do their bit to spread these laws. The majority of people abide by these laws and live by them, thereby exerting enormous pressure on the general public to conform to the system. Those who don't conform are at the bottom anyway. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
What most who adhere to this 'hierarchy' don't realise is that they are possibly and even probably only comparing themselves to an external fa\u00e7ade. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They know that it is imperative to 'appear' financially successful in order to get to the top of the hierarchy, ignoring the fact that the people they are competing with may not be as successful as they pretend to be. <\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The M\u00fcllers, who are desperately trying to keep up with the Schmitts, don't realise that the Schmitts are just trying to keep up with the Schulzes, while the Schulzes in turn are busy trying to keep up with the Meiers, and so on.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Perhaps this is where it becomes clear how ridiculous the whole thing actually is. So find out for yourself who you want to be and how you want to live. Don't worry about your neighbours, because you don't even know what's real about this facade and what's just a mask. <\/p>\n
Remember that life is a journey. Each of us has our own path. It runs parallel to other paths for a while, but sooner or later it changes direction. <\/p>\n
Let the others go their own way, even if it is a way of appearance and manipulation. It's their choice to live behind a mask, so let them. Focus only on what YOU want. Follow your path. Even if the path you are walking next to seems wider and greener, it is not your own. <\/p>\n
