Knowing how to react in the event of an acute allergy shock can mean the difference between life and death in extreme cases.

Food allergy

6 to 8% of all children under the age of 4 and around 4% of adults suffer from food allergies. The allergic reactions are usually skin rashes, swollen extremities or breathing difficulties. Around 30,000 acute emergencies are treated every year; around the same number of allergic shocks are dealt with without medical assistance. Approximately 150 people die each year from anaphylactic shocks.

More than 160 foods are known allergy triggers. 8 of them cause serious and life-threatening reactions in allergy sufferers. These 8 foods are peanuts, porridge nuts, fish and seafood, eggs, milk, wheat and soya. Young children with allergic symptoms often overcome their allergies as their immune system and digestive organs develop.

How to react to acute allergic shock

Anaphylaxis is a sudden and serious allergic reaction with life-threatening consequences. The symptoms affect the skin, respiratory tract, stomach, intestines and coronary arteries. The only safe treatment for a food allergy is strict avoidance of the known allergens. You should be prepared in case of accidental contact with the allergens:

Allergy sufferers should always have self-injectable adrenaline with them so that they have time to travel to hospital. An adrenaline injection counteracts the life-threatening reactions, but only lasts for about 10 to 20 minutes.

You should also have an antihistamine with you, either in liquid form or as fast-dissolving tablets, to treat milder allergic reactions.

It is recommended to wear a medical allergy bracelet so that bystanders know that the affected person is allergic.

Even if the symptoms subside, you should call the emergency services and never drive yourself.

More and more people are suffering from food allergies.
