The term hypnosis was introduced by the English physician J. Braid, who used it to treat nervous disorders.

Hypnosis has been recognised as a therapy by conventional medicine since the 1950s.

During hypnosis, the patient is put into a state of trance, whereby their consciousness changes and their attention is focussed on specific memories or ideas. The hypnotised patient is fully awake, but usually cannot remember after hypnosis what happened during it.

There are people who cannot be put into hypnosis, or only light hypnosis, because they cannot reach the deep trance state. Hypnosis cannot take place against a person's will. The patient must be relaxed and concentrate on the therapist's words in order to be put under hypnosis.

Hypnosis is used to overcome addictive behaviour (e.g. nicotine addiction or binge eating), personality disorders, phobias or to recall repressed traumatic experiences. Hypnosis can also help to overcome pain during operations, childbirth or dental treatment.

Hypnosis should only be practised by professionally trained staff such as doctors, dentists, psychologists or physiotherapists. You should be careful with self-proclaimed hypnotherapists.

Hypnosis for pain management

During hypnotherapy, the patient learns to become aware of their body, to breathe evenly and to block out distractions from their environment. The patient must then concentrate on their pain in order to actively influence it. This enables them to change the characteristics of the pain and regulate its intensity.

Hypnosis for traumatic memories

To treat a traumatic experience that the patient has repressed into the subconscious, they are first put into a trance state and then, with the help of the therapist, mentally travel back to the time and place of the experience. This can result in a dramatic change in voice and a strong emotional outburst if the patient is directly confronted with their trauma, which they usually do not remember afterwards.

Verschiedene Hypnoseformen gibt es seit dem Altertum.
