It plays an important role in metabolism.

Liver cirrhosis is the progressive scarring of the liver. The healthy tissue of the liver is replaced by tangles, so that the function of the liver is restricted. If liver cirrhosis remains untreated, it is fatal.

Causes of liver cirrhosis

The most common cause is excessive alcohol consumption. Years of consuming half a litre of high-proof alcohol per day or correspondingly higher quantities of beer or wine can lead to liver cirrhosis.

Other less common causes are chronic hepatitis or a genetic defect. Occasionally, liver cirrhosis occurs as a consequence of Wilson's disease, haemachromatosis or cystic fibrosis.

Symptoms of liver cirrhosis

The usual symptoms are loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, nausea with vomiting, weakness and pain in the abdominal area.

Diagnosis and treatment

To determine whether the patient is suffering from liver cirrhosis, the doctor palpates the abdomen. A hardening of the liver or an enlarged spleen indicate liver cirrhosis. Blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound and X-ray examinations as well as a biopsy, i.e. the removal of a tissue sample, provide final certainty.

Liver cirrhosis caused by alcohol is treated with a strict diet and an absolute ban on alcohol. In more severe cases, surgery is required. In cases of genetic cirrhosis, a liver transplant is often the only treatment, as the scarring of the liver cannot be cured.

The diet of a liver cirrhosis patient requires the correct intake of protein. Too little protein inhibits the regeneration of the liver, while too much protein leads to an accumulation of ammonia in the blood. Animal protein should be largely avoided and vegetable protein should be consumed instead. To ensure that the protein is not converted into energy but is used to regenerate the liver, the daily energy requirement must be covered by sufficient carbohydrates. B vitamins are also important.

There is no cure for liver cirrhosis in naturopathy. Only some herbal preparations can alleviate the symptoms and stop further scarring. These herbal preparations are milk thistle, cynarin, garlic, barberry, black radish, dandelion and echinacea.

What liver cirrhosis patients can do themselves

Completely abstain from alcohol

Only take absolutely necessary medication

Avoid contact with toxic chemicals

Avoid raw seafood and other foods that can cause hepatitis

The liver detoxifies the body by washing toxins out of the blood.
