The media leads us to believe that sex offenders choose their victims arbitrarily and at random. However, experience shows that child abusers look for their victims among their circle of acquaintances.

Who commits sexual offences against children?

What kind of people prey on children and minors and ruthlessly ruin their lives? The internet gives potential child abusers a platform to choose victims they don't know. However, this is a relatively rare occurrence. It is much more common for sexual offences to be committed against children where the victim and perpetrator already know each other. Around a third of all sexual offences against children are committed by a family member.

Unfortunately, a potential child molester cannot be recognised with certainty in advance. However, there are certain character traits that appear in sex offenders:

A child abuser was often abused himself in his childhood. Almost all sex offenders have a history of either physical or sexual abuse in their own childhood.

Sex offenders know that they are committing a crime, but they believe that their victim will also enjoy the act.

Sex offenders have social and intimacy problems. They are usually unable to communicate with other people or have an intimate relationship with a partner of the same age.

A child abuser lacks compassion and empathy. They are unable to empathise emotionally with their victims.

Sex offenders often suffer from an inability to control their feelings and actions. They act impulsively without thinking about the consequences of their actions.

The crime that convicts the child molester was usually not his first offence. He shows tendencies towards deviant sexual behaviour.

Not every person who displays these character traits will become a sex offender. Conversely, there are also sex offenders who do not exhibit all of these character traits.

How do you protect your child from sexual offences?

Communication with children is the best protection against sexual offences. Children should learn to tell their parents everything they experience and what is bothering them, even if someone tells them not to tell. Criminals intimidate their victims by telling them that they have to keep the secret, otherwise something bad will happen. Children should be warned about this behaviour in advance. It is best to try to teach children early on that there are bad people who appear friendly at first glance and that they can trust their parents. It is also best not to leave a child alone with an adult whom you do not trust one hundred per cent. If possible, the child should have a friend or sibling with them when the parents are not present.

Sexualverbrechen an Kindern gehören zu den größten Ängsten von Eltern.
