Like all citrus fruits, it is a natural source of vitamin C and fibre. However, anyone taking prescription medication should be aware of the possible interactions between their medication and grapefruit. When these interactions became known in the 1980s, patients were simply advised to take the medication separately from the fruit. However, it is now known that grapefruit or grapefruit juice should not be consumed at all with certain medicines.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most drugs that are taken orally are broken down by enzymes in the digestive organs and liver. Grapefruit contains natural substances that inhibit the activity of one of these enzymes, CYP3A4. The enzyme CYP3A4 is necessary to break down many commonly used drugs. If this enzyme is inhibited by grapefruit, this can lead to a change in the amount of the drug in the blood. There is either too much or too little of the drug in the blood.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Not every medicine is affected by grapefruit. Most over-the-counter medicines are not affected. The following medicines interact with grapefruit:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amiodarone for the heart<\/p>\n<p>Nifedipine for blood pressure<\/p>\n<p>Triazolam and midazolam for sedation before surgery<\/p>\n<p>Enthromycin for infections and gastroparesis<\/p>\n<p>Tacrolimus for immunosuppression<\/p>\n<p>Simvastatin and lovastatin for cholesterol<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of these interactions can be dangerous.
