The hallucinogen, which was discovered in 1938 by the Swiss Albert Hoffmann, laid the foundations for the hippie movement of the 1960s and inspired interest in neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Albert Hoffmann was engaged in pharmaceutical research in Basel, through which he hoped to develop a drug to treat labour pain. He synthesised the substance lysergic acid diethylamide, did not find it interesting for his purposes on first examination and therefore stored it for the time being. It was not until five years later that Hoffmann discovered the properties of the substance by accidentally absorbing a good portion of LSD while working without gloves. On his way home by bike, he experienced a stream of \"<span>uninterrupted, fantastic images of extraordinary plasticity and with an intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours\".<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1966, LSD was illegalised in the USA, which made research considerably more difficult.
