To determine whether a horse is healthy, there are various characteristics that you can check yourself. Not only can you find out whether a horse is suffering from acute illnesses before you buy it, but you can also check whether the horse is fit before you ride it so that it is not overloaded.<\/p>\n

\nThis is how you recognise a healthy horse:<\/p>\n

The pulse is between 36 and 40 beats per minute at rest.<\/p>\n

Approx. 12 breaths per minute at rest. The breathing rate increases with exercise, heat and nervousness. After major exertion, breathing must calm down to less than 72 breaths within 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

Body temperature between 37 and 38.3 degrees.<\/p>\n

The horse should greedily pounce on its concentrated feed and completely devour its normal ration.<\/p>\n

The horse's coat must be shiny and lie flat.<\/p>\n

The skin must be supple and slightly greasy. The skin of a sick horse dries out quickly.<\/p>\n

There is no swelling on palpation of the legs and the horse does not flinch.<\/p>\n

The mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes are pale pink in colour. Internal diseases often show discolouration of the mucous membranes.<\/p>\n
