They hope that the cats will become best friends and can play together all day long in the future. For some animals, introducing a new companion is no big deal, while others defend their territory with teeth and claws.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips on how to familiarise two cats with each other with as little stress as possible.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Day 1:<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Set up a room for the new cat<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The room for the new cat should be lockable with a door to separate the two cats for the time being. The room should be equipped with everything the new cat smokes, so that both cats have access to food and water, litter tray, toys and a place to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leave the new cat in the carrier<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Never carry the new cat in your arms through the flat past the old cat. The old cat will be disturbed by the intruder, while the new cat, unsettled by the unfamiliar surroundings, will try to jump off the arm. Under these circumstances, a fight is inevitable, so be sure to leave the new cat in the carrier.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take the new cat to its separate room and close the door<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open the carrier basket<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then wait and see. Don't force the cat onto the container, it should want to come out on its own. Forcibly removing it increases the cat's insecurity and makes it even more anxious.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stay in the room with the cat for a while<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Talk to her gently and encouragingly and keep her company for a while.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leave the cat alone after half an hour<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can come back to her later, but you don't want to neglect your old cat or she will get jealous. The new cat will also benefit from exploring her new environment on her own, she will feel safer when she is alone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Let the old cat sniff at the door<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lead her to the door of the room with the new cat, but make sure you leave the door closed. The old cat will notice the new odour and will need a little time to get used to it.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Day 2:<\/strong><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lead the old cat into the room with the new cat<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stroke both cats. If they try to attack each other, spray the aggressor with water from a spray bottle. Leave the two cats together for about 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Take the old cat out of the room again<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try to be as gentle as possible so as not to leave any negative impressions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Repeat the process several times a day<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> Bring both cats together in the same way for a few minutes at a time so that they can gradually get used to each other.<\/p>\n<h1>Day 3:<\/h1>\n<p>If the two cats have got on well by then, follow the next steps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open the door<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now let the two cats deal with each other on their own.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Place the new cat's food and water bowls next to the old cat's bowls<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This way, both cats will get used to each other without food envy and the old cat won't feel disadvantaged. Of course, you have to show the new cat where you have put their bowls.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Place the new cat's litter tray next to the old cat's litter tray<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This can be handled only as a temporary solution during the familiarisation phase or can remain so permanently. Two cats usually share their litter tray without any problems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Show the new cat the scratching board<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just as you probably showed the old cat where to sharpen its claws at some point, you must do the same with the new one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stroke the cats <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stroke and caress both cats equally, preferably in front of the other cat, so that both cats know that they are equally loved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stay strict<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If one of the two cats does something they shouldn't, immediately grab the spray bottle and warn them in a sharp voice. You must also praise them when they have done something well.<\/p>\n<p>If the two cats have not got on well by then, continue with the trial visits for a few more days. Only if things are going well, proceed to day 3.<\/p>\n<p>Even hostile cats can learn to get along and play with each other over time.
