Even the mother mare cares more for her foal than for herself.<\/p>\n<p>The owner is therefore responsible for caring for the mare. It is important to have a vet who knows the mare at your side before the birth. <br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/>Problems that can occur in the mare after foaling include fever, lethargy, extreme tiredness, balance problems or even vomiting.<\/p>\n<p>The owner should check the pulse regularly and look out for signs of pain, dark discoloured membranes and susceptibility to colic. <br \/>The most common cause of these problems in the mare is retained placenta. As this can be life-threatening, the vet should be informed immediately if the placenta has not come out within 3 hours of foaling.<br \/>Remember that the mare is very sensitive to the emotions of her obstetrician.
