How to prevent motion sickness on long-haul flights

Aeroplane and motion sickness

Even frequent travellers occasionally suffer from motion sickness when they spend many hours on a plane. On the plane, motion sickness is caused by pressure differences that can disturb the body's balance and cause nausea. In addition to travel tablets available in pharmacies, there are various home remedies to prevent or alleviate motion sickness.

At the first sign of nausea on the go, put half a nutmeg under the tongue. Nutmeg has a calming and stabilising effect. When it melts under the tongue, the active ingredient quickly enters the bloodstream.

If travel sickness is common, it is best to start drinking ginger tea when boarding the plane. It is best to bring your own ginger tea bags and ask the crew for some hot water, as ginger tea is not usually part of the in-flight equipment. Ginger has a natural effect against nausea. Ginger capsules also work well.

Before taking a flight, avoid excessive sugar consumption or carbohydrate-rich foods, as these can trigger adrenaline surges. Also, do not travel on an empty stomach, but fill your stomach with protein-rich food and vegetables.

Peppermint oil is an effective remedy for motion sickness and nausea. You can take it with you in the form of a smelling bottle or chew peppermint gum.

You can ask the crew for a few cubes. Sucking on ice cubes soothes the stomach and dilutes stomach acid, which is often the trigger for nausea.

When checking in, reserve a window seat if possible, because looking out the window gives the eye a focus and helps you stay calmer. Many people feel cramped in a window seat. In this case, they should book an aisle seat and get up and walk around regularly.

When taking the seat, make sure that the air supply above the seat is open and directed towards the face.
