Leipzig, the city of books and music, is located in the south of the Leipzig lowlands. Leipzig is best known for the Leipzig Book Fair and is also home to the German Library.

University. Leipzig is home to Germany's oldest university after Heidelberg, the Alma Mater Lipsiensis. It is located directly in the city centre in Universitätsstraße near the Opera House.
The east side of the market square is dominated by the old town hall from whose so-called Annunciation Balcony the Leipzig City Pipers give a concert every weekend. The town hall houses the City Museum.
Just a few steps away from the market square is the Barthels Hof and the coffee house Coffee treeone of the oldest coffee houses in Europe.
The St Thomas' Church lies to the south-west of the market square and is home to the famous St Thomas Choir. Johann Sebastian Bach is buried in St Thomas' Church. The church dates back to the 13th century.
On the south side of the market is the Royal Housewhere, among others, Peter the Great came and went.
The so-called Naschmarkt was originally a meeting place for merchants. Today, concerts and literary events are held there. The Naschmarkt is located at the rear of the town hall.
The exhibition centre next to the Royal House is home to the Mädler PassageLeipzig's most beautiful shopping arcade. There is also the one mentioned in Goethe's Faust Auerbachskeller.
Just a few minutes' walk from the city centre, the elegant new building of the Mercury Hotels Leipzig Am Johannisplatz.
In the centre of Leipzig, you can take a trip back to the city of Rome in 312. In the Panometer is home to the largest panorama in the world and shows a complete panoramic view of ancient Rome.
To the south of the old town is the imposing Monument to the Battle of the Nationswhich is a memorial to the 1813 battle against Napoleon. It is 91 metres high. From the platform of the monument you have a wonderful view of Leipzig and the surrounding area. The exhibition pavilion inside tells the story of the battle that took place at the gates of Leipzig.
The Leipzig Book Fair takes place in Leipzig every year. The impressive sculptures of the Brockhaus books are located in front of the exhibition centre.
