As a holidaymaker in another country, you should behave as if you were a guest in a foreign house, namely with respect and consideration. In order not to spoil your holiday or for your own safety, a tourist in Austria should refrain from the following things.


Mountain travel by car. Steep and narrow mountain roads can be life-threatening even for an experienced driver who is not familiar with the terrain. Always drive downhill in low gears, never depress the clutch and keep your foot on the brake, because the brakes get hot very quickly.
Also drive uphill in low gear and make sure that the engine does not overheat. On narrow and steep roads, if there is an oncoming vehicle, the one going uphill has the right of way.

Mountain hikes. All too often, the mountain rescue service has to go out to save inexperienced mountain hikers with inadequate equipment from an emergency. There are five general basic rules for a hike in the mountains:
Wear suitable footwear and weatherproof clothing.
Never leave the signposted hiking trails.
3. do not overestimate your own abilities.
4. tell someone else the planned route for the day.
5. ask locals for advice.

Road traffic in the city. In bad weather conditions, it is better not to drive into town, but to use public transport. Heavy rain or snow causes traffic chaos in many Austrian cities.

In the pub. Never sit at a designated regulars' table without first asking the host.

Hike through nature. Never walk cross-country across a high meadow, because farmers react angrily when the grass is trampled flat for haymaking. Of course, this also applies to cornfields and other farm fields.

Patience. Don't get impatient if the food you ordered in the restaurant is not delivered immediately. Austrians don't like it when German holidaymakers grumble when everything doesn't go like clockwork.
