Hiccups are uncontrolled twitches of the diaphragm, usually accompanied by an involuntary "hic".
That can sometimes be quite embarrassing. What is the best way to get rid of a hiccup quickly?
Here are some methods. Try whichever one works best for you.
- In mild cases, repeated swallowing helps. Hold your breath and swallow repeatedly and in quick succession. It is also good to swallow water in as many small sips as possible.
- Cover your nose and ears and swallow twenty times in a row as quickly as possible.
- If someone else in your neighbourhood has the hiccups, you can often scare them away. However, this only works if the person has not been warned in advance.
- Relax and breathe in deeply. Fully utilise the lung volume.
- Distraction. Sing a song or go through the multiplication tables until the hiccups are gone.
- Breathe out completely and hold your breath for as long as possible.
- Think of something funny or have someone tell you a joke. Laughing also drives away the hiccups.
- Do a headstand and drink water with a straw.
- "Hiccup" deliberately and loudly. When the hiccup comes, breathe in so that a particularly loud hiccup is produced. After about 3 attempts, the hiccups should be gone.
- Melt a teaspoon of sugar under your tongue.
- Eat a few pickled cucumbers.
- Say the alphabet backwards as fast as you can.
- Close your eyes and consciously think of "nothing at all".
