Silence is golden, learn to bite your tongue

Conversations between people

Many people feel uncomfortable with pauses and silences, which is why they often speak before they have thought things through well enough. To avoid being drawn into unwanted commitments by overzealous comments, you can learn to bite your tongue. You will realise that it is often better to say nothing or less.

Practise with a friend in situations where there is less risk. With a friend or partner, you can act out discussions and stressful conversations and practise biting your tongue before speaking so that you don't make any rash remarks.

If you tend to speak first and think later and pauses in speech make you uncomfortable, you need to train yourself to bite your tongue until the other person speaks first.

During a negotiation, you can take advantage of pauses in your speech. If the negotiating partner makes an offer, hold back with obvious reactions and say nothing at all. If you don't react for a full minute, the other party will be forced to revise their offer.

Don't waste your energy on gossipers. It's a good exercise in restraint and gives you a certain sense of power to deny the gossipers the reaction they are after.

In heated arguments, it's easy to say things that you later regret. Here in particular, it makes sense to refrain from making comments until emotions have cooled down.
