Typical technical terms that describe Rococo works of art:

Balustrade. Balustrade consisting of small columns and pillars and located on balconies or staircases.

Bozzetto. First artistic design on a smaller scale for a sculptural work of art. 

Chinoiserie. Preference for Chinese porcelain, fabrics and lacquerware, as many of these goods were imported to Europe from East Asia at this time. Chinese motifs were used in porcelain production and for ornamentation on furniture and textiles.

Fresco. Wall painting in which the lime colour is applied to the still-wet plaster and the painting thus becomes an integral part of the wall. 

Grotesque. Ornamental form using animal or human elements.

Chest of drawers. This piece of furniture appeared in the Rococo period. The Rococo period was a heyday of small furniture.

Lunette. Arched field above a window or a portal in semi-circular form, which serves as a transition between the wall structure and the vault fresco.

Order. Architectural system of certain rules and standards. Rococo is characterised by the dissolution of order and the equivalence of forms.

Ornamental stitch. Graphic representation of the ornaments.

Panneau. Typical form of wall division in the Rococo period, decorated with inset pictures and ornaments.

Pastel. Painting technique in which coloured chalk is applied to a roughened surface. 

Porcelain. Form of ceramic consisting of white kaolin clay and fusible feldspar. Originating in China, the porcelain was mainly processed in Dresden (Meissen porcelain).

Rocaille. Rococo ornament in the shape of a shell or plant, usually with an S or C curve. The entire rococo style is expressed through the rocaille, as both the pattern and the background become an ornament.

Sketch. Drawing design for a picture or sculpture.

Stucco. Compound for interior design, consisting of plaster, lime and sand.

Volute. Snail or spiral-shaped element for decorating architecture.
