Why does everyone turn away from me

Woman with a negative attitude

Many people tend to engage in nonsensical and selfish behaviour without realising it. They often don't even realise that their habits are turning their fellow human beings off. They often wonder why so many friends turn away from them. The following behaviour patterns can contribute to the fact that nobody likes you:

You speak in gibberish. If you have something important to say, make it understandable for others. Too much technical jargon is too difficult for others who are not experts to understand and bores them. They feel excluded in your presence. Your behaviour doesn't give them the courage to tell you that they can't follow you because they feel stupid. Sure, you may know more about your subject than they do, but there's a lot that they know that you don't. You're not smarter or better than them. What your peers need from you is the same respect that you demand from them.

You interrupt others. Someone is in the middle of a sentence and you simply interject. This is very frustrating and makes other people angry. You give others the feeling that their contribution is not important, only what comes out of your mouth. Let others finish, otherwise no one will talk to you.

You can't listen. This bad habit goes hand in hand with interrupting. Listening properly means letting others finish, taking an interest and responding. If you simply switch off when others are talking, they will feel that you don't care about what is important to them and they simply won't tell you anything more.

The other way round, they start to stop listening to you.

You are afraid of failure. The fear of making a mistake is often greater than the desire to do something right. This will destroy your self-esteem in the long run and make it difficult for you to make decisions. Always playing it safe won't get you anywhere in your private and professional life.

What can you do about these behavioural patterns? First of all, you need to become aware of the bad social habits you have acquired. Whenever you find yourself in a situation where you offend others, consciously work on yourself. The more often you go against your normal habits, the more natural this will become for you. Ask a friend to point this out to you as soon as you fall back into your old patterns.
