Dealing with surges of emotion in the right way

Surge of emotions: Talking about the feelings

Certain situations, words or memories can trigger an exuberance of sudden feelings. These feelings can be both negative and positive. If one is overcome by such a wave of feelings, it is important for mental and physical health to let these feelings out, to communicate.

The worst thing is to keep emotions bottled up. Negative and positive emotions that are always suppressed accumulate in the subconscious in the long run and sooner or later cause a nervous breakdown.
Communicating feelings can be a difficult task, especially while overcome by a strong surge of emotion. To effectively let out emotions in the future requires some forward planning. This way, you not only communicate your emotions effectively to yourself, but they are also better received by those around you.

Whether positive or negative, a strong surge of emotion should first cool down a little. Often the immediate need of extreme emotions is to share them with someone. But the emotional high can lead to revealing things that you later regret.

After a little cooling of the feelings, one should sort out the thoughts. Before you can tell someone your feelings, you have to learn to understand them yourself. It makes sense to find the trigger of the feelings and to record accompanying thoughts. You can make some notes about this, because when the feelings subside, the temporary clarity and understanding of them often disappears. The why and the background of the feelings must be clarified for oneself in these moments. In the case of negative feelings such as anger, sadness or fear, you can also try to find ways to alleviate the wave of feelings.

In the self-analysis of feelings, one should focus entirely on one's own self. Here, it is not initially a question of being justified or not, but of how one feels and what is the trigger for these feelings.

The moment to talk about feelings with a person must be chosen correctly. It should preferably be an intimate conversation between two people, at a time when neither is under time pressure. The time is important to give yourself and the other person the opportunity to fully analyse and understand each other's feelings. No accusations should be made, but an attempt should be made to explain one's own feelings to the other person, and to understand the other person as well, if the feelings are mutual.

The feelings and the talk about the feelings should be honest, honest with oneself and with the other person. It only helps if the true feelings can be let out. If one of the conversation partners shows up in a tense or angry position, one should give oneself the opportunity to take a deep breath, because it is no use if the conversation ends in an argument.

Besides letting your feelings out, listening to the other person's response and opinion is also important. It is important to remember that other people have feelings too and people's perspectives of certain situations are perceived differently.
