Jealousy

Dealing with and combating jealousy

Jealousy
Jealousy is a feeling that is difficult to control. All of us are jealous in one way or another. We compare ourselves to others, wish we could be like them or have what they have, the same looks or their friends and partners. Even though jealousy is normal to a certain extent, it is still something we can work on and learn to deal with so that it doesn't become pathological.

If you suffer from jealousy in a relationship, it is important to talk to your partner about it. Tell your partner how you feel and why, so that you can find a solution together. A lot of things can often be clarified through dialogue and your partner can try to help you with your feelings by being understanding. Don't attack your partner with angry accusations, but limit yourself to your feelings. Regardless of how your partner reacts, an open conversation is the healthiest way to deal with jealousy, because morbid jealousy usually achieves the opposite: you don't bind your partner to you, but destroy the relationship in the long term.

If the jealous feelings do not diminish over time and you experience exaggerated bouts of anger or self-pity, it is time to seek professional help. By talking to a psychotherapist, you can find out the real cause of your jealousy and treat it. The psychotherapist will not judge you badly, but will listen to you and try to help you.

If your jealousy is focussed on what other people have or how they look, you are obviously suffering from diminished self-esteem. Write down what you like about yourself and look for imperfections in other people, because your idols have flaws too. List everything you can be proud of and be grateful for what you have and who you are. If you don't like much about yourself, ask your family and friends what they like about you.

As soon as the feeling of jealousy arises, take a deep breath and think for a moment. Think briefly about why you feel this way and whether the situation justifies such strong emotions. Unfortunately, jealousy won't get you anywhere, so set yourself goals that you want to achieve instead. Work on improving yourself to achieve what you envy others for.
