A bottle of sparkling wine is under a lot of pressure, because the sparkling wine inside contains carbon dioxide that wants to come out as quickly as possible when it is opened. To prevent the champagne cork from flying to the ceiling with a loud bang and the good sparkling wine from bubbling out of the bottle, you need to know how to open the bottle correctly.
The champagne bottle should rest for at least a whole day before opening. The more it is moved or shaken, the more pressure builds up inside the bottle.
Remove the foil and wire from the top of the bottle and press one hand firmly onto the cork, as the wire holds the cork in place. Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle away from your body and do not point it at the guests or the champagne glasses.
If the bottle has just come out of the fridge, some moisture will form on the outside of the glass. So wipe the bottle before opening to prevent it from slipping out of your hand. Now place a clean kitchen towel over the cork. The cloth will catch the cork and soak up any spilt or overflowing champagne. Caution: Plastic corks slip out of the bottle more quickly than natural corks!
Hold the cork with the kitchen towel over it with one hand and carefully turn the bottle. Support the bottle against your own body for better control. Carefully twist the bottle to loosen the cork until it pops out completely with a soft pop.
Now it's time to fill the glasses, but only halfway at first so that the bubbling foam doesn't run over the rim.
