How do you get the man to help around the house?

Kitchen and household

There is still a certain lack of understanding between men and women in their daily lives together. The woman often feels that she does the housework alone while the man lounges on the couch. Conversely, the man sees himself as a hard-working breadwinner and feels that he deserves a rest after the working day. Each couple can only decide for themselves who works more than the other. However, if both partners work full-time, it seems fair that both should help out equally in the household. How do you motivate him to do more around the house?

As with all problems, the solution starts with communication. If you feel like you're doing more than your share of the housework, tell him how you feel. But be diplomatic and refrain from accusations or patronising remarks that put him on the defensive. If you are looking for understanding and support, show him understanding as well.

But show him that you're serious. Sometimes he needs a little push to see your point of view. It might work better if you write down your feelings. That way, the man can take time to internalise the message. However, the tone of written messages is often misunderstood, so show him that you are looking for a peaceful solution and add a few smileys to your letter.

Before you talk to him, think carefully about whether and what your husband actually does around the house. He may not do the daily washing up, but he does take care of the garden or the occasional renovation. Try to be fair when weighing up the division of labour.

Think carefully about whether you're expecting too much of him. Maybe your husband has a more physically demanding job and often works overtime and really has no energy at the end of the day. Give him the opportunity to help you at weekends when he is rested.

Don't talk to him when he comes home tired from work. After a busy day, you are both tired and the conversation will only end in an argument. A peaceful discussion can only be achieved with a fresh head.

Another tip: give him household chores that you particularly dislike, but that he doesn't mind so much. Men can easily take on the less pleasant tasks such as cleaning drains, toilets, removing spiders or clearing mould from the fridge. This leaves you with more time-consuming tasks, but they are more bearable. This means he won't be overburdened and you will be relieved of an unpleasant burden.
