Below we present some ways and means of ridding plants of their pests, or preventing them from infesting them and visiting your garden in the first place.

You can buy a huge amount of pesticides in the shops, but most of them are harmful to the environment and can affect other animals, e.g. birds that eat the insects that have been poisoned with them.


So instead of using chemicals, try out some of these more natural options first to get rid of the pests.

Nettle broth

One effective method against pests is to make a nettle decoction. Collect stinging nettles and soak them in cold water for at least a day. The resulting decoction is excellent for combating pest infestations, it simply needs to be sprayed on and the pests will go away.

Garlic not only helps against vampires

If you plant garlic bulbs near plants that pests like to attack, they will look for somewhere other than your garden. This is especially true for pests such as snails and voles.

The only thing to note is that the garlic should not start to grow, instead dig out the bulb and plant a new one, otherwise it may crowd out the other plants instead of the pests.

Lavender

Lavender smells pleasant to humans, but pests such as ants and aphids flee from it. These pests, as well as moths, have a different smell and will avoid the plants near which lavender has been planted.

In addition to its pleasant smell, this plant is also beautiful to look at with its small purple-coloured flowers, but its growth should definitely be trimmed, otherwise it will start to sprawl and lose its beautiful shape.

Soft soap

Aphids can also be controlled with soft soap water by spraying it on plants. However, this product primarily helps against the living animals, the eggs of the pests are not destroyed, which is why it is necessary to repeat the treatment several times until no more pests can be detected.

Onions

Just like garlic, onion plants also help against certain pests, such as mice and voles. Bulbs are planted in places where mice seem to like to stay, recognisable by the excrement left behind, in the case of voles by the tunnels created just below the ground, which can be easily seen on the surface. If you can't plant onions or garlic in these places, you can also try scattering cloves and tubers, as long as it smells strong, because this is where the pests' sense of smell is challenged.
