If you rarely or insufficiently air your home, you will quickly get mould on the walls. Mould is very bad for the respiratory system and often leads to allergies, headaches and respiratory diseases. This is how to ventilate properly to avoid mould.

Since it is not always clear whether mould is caused by poor insulation of the walls or by incorrect ventilation, disputes often arise between tenant and landlord. Tenants tend to accuse the landlord of structural faults, but in many cases the problem of mould on the interior walls can be remedied by proper air circulation.

Proper ventilation to prevent mould growth in the home

Regular air exchange is very important in every living space. Mould is only a small part of the problem, there are also many pollutants in furniture, fireplaces and everyday objects that make the air we breathe stuffy if not ventilated enough.

Permanently tilted windows ensure optimal air exchange, but they also significantly increase heating costs. Therefore, the window in a room should only be left tilted for several hours while the heating is switched off or at least throttled back, for example at night.

It is recommended to ventilate twice a day by opening the windows wide and leaving them open for a few minutes. If the humidity is particularly high, you should ventilate even more often during the day. To increase the effectiveness of the ventilation, all interior doors should also be opened wide to increase the air circulation through the resulting draught. Of course, the heating should be turned off during the airing period.
