What causes muscle cramps

A muscle cramp is a sudden, involuntary cramping of muscles that is accompanied by stabbing pain. Muscle cramps usually occur in the limbs, but can also affect internal organs.

The most common causes of muscle cramps

 

Circulatory disorders of the muscles, often caused by hardened arteries (arteriosclerosis)

Exhaustion, e.g. when swimming

Cold

Minor muscle injuries caused by sporting activities

One-sided muscle strain from working at a desk, usually in the hands, arms, neck and shoulders.

Chronic overuse of certain muscles, such as cramps in the hand when writing.

Loss of sodium, potassium and magnesium due to heavy sweating (heat cramps).

Unaccustomed strain on the back and leg muscles during pregnancy.

Cramps of internal organs: menstrual cramps, angina pectoris and colon cramps.
