Salmonella infections are transmitted by bacteria, especially in raw eggs and undercooked meat, and cause gastrointestinal problems.
Here are the 5 golden rules that protect against salmonella infection:
- Do not allow frozen goods to thaw, for example on the way home from the shops. Take cool bags with you and wrap the goods well in them so that they remain cold-insulated until they are placed in the freezer compartment at home.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after preparing meals.
- Clean kitchen utensils and worktop thoroughly with hot water after preparing food.
- For dishes that are eaten with uncooked eggs, such as mayonnaise or tiramisu, only use very fresh and well-chilled eggs. Of course, it is safer to avoid dishes with uncooked eggs.
- Avoid ice cream or other products from unhygienic or suspect food stalls.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning are abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea and increased temperature. First aid in this case is to drink plenty of fluids, especially tea and water. It is better to see a doctor immediately afterwards.
