What to do about wisdom tooth pain

Wisdom tooth

Wisdom teeth usually grow between the ages of 17 and 21. Even healthy wisdom teeth can cause enormous pain during the weeks of growth. To make the growing phase more bearable, there are a few things you can do to make the pain less debilitating.

If the pain is extreme and persistent, you should consult a dentist. Very severe pain that does not subside after a few days may indicate a more serious problem that needs to be treated by a dentist.

When pain occurs, it often helps to chew gum. Chewing massages the painful areas and provides temporary relief.

You can also try slightly anaesthetising lozenges from the pharmacy, which are available over the counter, such as Dobendan lozenges. There is also medication that can be applied directly to the painful area to temporarily anaesthetise it locally.

Sometimes it helps to rinse your mouth with warm salt water. You should rinse the salt water solution in your mouth for 30 seconds and then spit it out. The salt has an anti-inflammatory effect and temporarily reduces the pain.

Finally, certain painkillers can help. Paracetamol or acetaminophen work well, although you should read the package leaflet carefully.

Note: If the wisdom tooth has completely grown out, the pain should stop. If it still hurts, you should go to the dentist.

Sometimes a wisdom tooth grows crooked because there is not enough space in the mouth. In this case, the wisdom tooth must be extracted as it could otherwise damage the other teeth.
