The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower back to the heel. Incorrect movements can cause a vertebra to shift and press on the sciatic nerve, causing sudden and unpleasant pain and an inability to move.
Help against acute pain
Aspirin or ibuprofen relieve sciatica pain and thus prevent cramps caused by the pain.
Rest in bed on a firm mattress or on the floor until the pain subsides enough for you to be able to move again. Try to breathe as relaxed as possible.
When lying down, always place at least one pillow under your knees. This relieves the pressure exerted by the vertebra on the nerve.
Always support yourself well when standing up or sitting down.
Place heating pads or microwaved pads on the lower back and relax.
Never lift heavy objects.
Avoid bending down and sitting on soft chairs.
Eat plenty of fibre and fruit to avoid constipation, which would irritate the sciatic nerve even more.
If the pain does not get better, see a doctor.
