Multivitamin supplements are even available in some supermarkets and in every price range. If you believe the ingredients, a multivitamin supplement from the supermarket for little money is just as rich in vitamins as an expensive product from the pharmacy. So it's better to buy the cheap one, because vitamins are vitamins, aren't they?
Unfortunately, the fact is that various vitamin supplements are of lower quality or contain a lot of artificial additives due to the way they are manufactured.
Many inexpensive vitamin supplements contain nutrients in a form that is more difficult for the body to absorb. As a result, nutrients that are not broken down are excreted unused and a large proportion of the vitamins are lost.
Vitamin supplements often contain preservatives, sweeteners and artificial flavours and aromas. High-quality preparations are made with significantly fewer or no artificial ingredients.
The absorbed nutrients must pass through the digestive system to enter the bloodstream. Bioavailability measures how much is actually utilised by the body and how much is flushed out. Vitamins that do not have bioavailability are practically useless because they do not enter the bloodstream and are therefore not absorbed. The composition of the vitamin product only shows the ingredient and its quantity and does not provide any information about its biological availability.
In pharmaceutically tested vitamin supplements, many of the nutrients are combined with other molecules that help them to be transported into the bloodstream. However, as this process is more costly, it is unlikely that cheap vitamin supplements will use them.
When produced using artificial additives, many nutrients are rendered unusable for the body, which is why a product without additives is much more valuable.
What you should look out for in a multivitamin preparation
A high-quality vitamin supplement is pharmaceutically tested and contains nutrients from natural and bioavailable sources. No artificial sweeteners, preservatives, flavourings, aromas, colourings or bulking agents have been used in its manufacture.
