Headache after too much alcohol

Hangover headache

After drinking a large amount of alcohol or a mix of different alcoholic beverages, headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and circulatory problems can occur the next day. The stomach may feel queasy and you may feel listless. These symptoms describe a typical hangover.

Alcohol dehydrates the body because the blood vessels dilate and the kidneys excrete more water. The lack of fluids is mainly responsible for the headache. This lack of fluids must be compensated for by drinking plenty of mineral water or camomile tea.

Painkillers containing the active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid (e.g. Aspirin) help to relieve acute headaches.

Fruit juices rebalance the blood sugar level and accelerate the breakdown of alcohol.

A few slices of raw ginger soothe the upset stomach of a hangover. The pressure and dull throbbing in the head can be relieved with cold, moist compresses on the eyes, forehead and temples.

The body usually automatically craves it: acidic foods such as pickled herring, pickles, pure lemon juice or mixed pickles help to regulate the water balance and counteract excess stomach acid in the stomach. Crackers and savoury sticks give the stomach stability.
A walk in the fresh air does wonders for hangovers.

You should avoid coffee, which slows down the breakdown of alcohol, nicotine and stuffy air.

If you experience severe hangover symptoms, loss of consciousness and severe, uninterrupted vomiting, you should be taken to an emergency doctor immediately, as alcohol poisoning is suspected.
