A cold, flu or flu-like infection is usually accompanied by a headache. Other symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, aching limbs and general weakness.

The headache is a side effect of the blocked airways, the inflammation in the body and the fever. Antipyretics such as paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin) relieve the pain. Colds can only be alleviated by treating the symptoms until the body has destroyed the germs itself.

A flu-like infection that lasts for more than ten days without noticeable improvement should be examined by a doctor. Colds that are carried over often result in sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) or occasionally pneumonia.

If there is reasonable suspicion of real flu, you should see a doctor immediately. A "real" flu is characterised by a sudden onset of high fever and severe headaches and aching limbs.
