Healing Breathwork as a Basic Supplementary Therapy

Breathing exercises

The stress and hectic pace of everyday life mean that many people have lost the ability to breathe healthily and rhythmically. They tend to breathe irregularly, intermittently, superficially and tensely.

Healthy and regular breathing plays an important role in well-being and health. This is why so-called therapeutic breathing is used as an additional therapeutic measure against many physical complaints and illnesses.

A basic distinction is made between two types of breathing: chest breathing and abdominal breathing. Auxiliary breathing is also described as flank breathing and shoulder breathing. In thoracic breathing, the tips of the lungs in particular are expanded, while in abdominal breathing the lower section of the lungs is expanded. The expansion of the lungs has an effect on the abdominal organs; a liver overfilled with blood, for example, is "squeezed out" and the intestines are stimulated in their movements.

Therapeutic breathing is a systematic breathing therapy in which active breathing exercises are prescribed individually by the doctor. It is often wrongly assumed that breathing therapy simply means strengthening breathing. This is not only incorrect, but can also be harmful. Instead, healing breathing involves restoring the interaction of all parts of the respiratory system in order to rediscover the natural breathing rhythm and store it in the subconscious.

Patients should not carry out breathing exercises on their own and without medical assistance, as they may cause damage to the body.

A general rule for breathing exercises is that breathing out is the active part, while breathing in is more passive and automatic. Healing breathing is performed several times a day for 10 minutes at a time, preferably while lying down. The bowels should be emptied before starting the healing breathing exercises. The breathing exercises include both chest breathing and abdominal breathing.

Healing breathing regulates blood pressure and strengthens heart function. Circulatory disorders, heart cramps, flatulence, chronic constipation and menstrual disorders can be treated with breathing exercises. Healing breathing also has a positive effect on the mental state and mood.
