Improve your memory and keep your brain fit

Memory

Part of getting older is the slight deterioration in memory. Over the years, memory deteriorates until simple things become difficult to remember. However, memory decline can be prevented and even if memory is already impaired, the brain can be trained and regain its former capacity.

The brain needs to be constantly trained and used in order to stay fit. This includes consciously remembering and memorising things. The shopping list should only be used as a check at the end of the shopping trip, the shopping itself should be done from the mind to activate the brain cells.

It helps to solve a crossword puzzle or Sudoku every day. Words that you didn't know but that come up in the puzzle should be consciously learnt so that you know them in the future.

Sufficient sleep is important for the regeneration of the brain and therefore memory. A brain that is not rested does not function properly, so that even simple things that you normally know are forgotten.

A balanced diet with lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables and wholemeal products improves brain activity and keeps the memory fit.

If you have problems with memorising and remembering, you can try using mnemonic devices. For example, if you have difficulty remembering names, you can mentally associate external characteristics of the person with the name in order to remember it the next time. (Examples: Frank with glasses, Blonde Bärbel or Short-haired Steffi).

Many people simply have problems retaining details because they let their attention wander. Instead, in situations where you need to remember things, you should pay full attention and block out anything distracting. This often helps to recall details more accurately.

To be on the safe side, you should consult a doctor in the event of acute memory loss, as a serious illness may be present.
