Chewing sugar-free gum is not only good for oral hygiene, but can also help you lose weight.
Sugar-free chewing gum: weight loss made easy
In a study at the University of Rhode Island, USA, the test subjects were given sugar-free chewing gum for twenty minutes at each of three morning sessions, i.e. the test subjects chewed sugar-free gum for a total of one hour during the morning. Afterwards, the test subjects ate their usual lunch. They reported that they felt less hungry and consumed an average of 67 fewer calories. These calories were not made up for later in the day either.
From this study it was concluded that chewing gum reduces appetite and calorie intake. But does chewing gum burn extra calories? In fact, it was found that the gum chewers consumed 5% more energy during their chewing sessions and felt more energised. The constant chewing motion causes the body to burn calories. Even if it is not much, considerable weight loss can be achieved over time by chewing sugar-free gum if you do it consistently.
